The
National Policy on Senior Citizens: Old are those above the
age of 60 years. In advanced and developed nations, those
above 65 years (because of better economic, educational and health
levels, established health services, longer life expectancy etc
compared against developing nations ). This definition is based on
the calendar / age.
-
The
definition of 'old' is more complicated than old according to the
calendar.
-
‘Old’
may be from the physiological, biology or functional aspects (or
functional ability) as an example: Dr Mahathir, in his 70s but
thinks and acts like a young visionary and creative person.
-
There is a
concept often used that is “Old-Young” Concept (65-74),
‘Old-Old’ (75-84) and ‘Very Old-Old’ (>85), an easy
method if age is the consideration. Normally there is not much
problem in the Old-Young group.
-
Society
normally relate 'old' problem as 'unhealthy', 'useless',
'lifeless' etc - Ageism, Negative, myths,
Stereotyping concept ( similar to sexism concept).
